The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain. The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.
Joshua 5:11-12
When I look back at the desert times of my life, I realize God always sent me special rations to get me through. After my divorce was the darkest, driest loneliest time of my life. God heightened my senses and I became especially thankful for colors in nature, soft textures, the feel of the sun and fresh air on my skin, and the sounds of music, wind, and rain.
His Word became my food. I had no appetite and sleep was nearly impossible, but the Bible—especially the Psalms, Isaiah, and Jeremiah—nourished and filled me like never before; they gave me hope.
Now, twelve years later, I am full of joy in a second marriage. I am valued, accepted, loved, and God has healed my heart. I still love His Word and treasure it, but I’m also back to eating regular food (sometimes more than I need). The miraculous manna God rained on me got me through that desert (as well as many others throughout my life). And afterward I enjoyed the bounty of Canaan on the other side.
God sustained the Israelites with manna for forty years during their desert wanderings. The amazing, miraculous, “bread from heaven” helped them learn to rely completely on God for all their needs. It taught them about His character and revealed His love for them.
You might be in a desert right now. It probably doesn’t feel like you’re passing through but lost and wandering in a vast wasteland of pain and confusion. I encourage you to devour His Word. God will send you a daily supply to strengthen and sustain you for the road ahead, but you must gather it every day (Ex. 16:4).
When you do you will say with Jeremiah, “When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, LORD God Almighty” (Jer. 15:16).
Or you may be experiencing great blessings right now, enjoying the produce of Canaan. That’s fantastic! Rejoice in God’s rest and provision. He always provides whatever we need in the desert until we’re home.
As you walk the streets of your city, whatever your present circumstances, pray for those in the desert. Pray God will send them manna and that they will be willing to gather it each day with gratitude, and be nourished for the journey ahead.
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
